New unreleased TAD vinyl for Record Store Day

 

I’m sure most of you are waiting this for years: on April 21st for Record Store Day TAD will be out with “Quick and Dirty” (vinyl and digital album via Bandcamp for MVD/Incineration Ceremony ). The historical heavy-than-heaven grunge band is one of the most appreciated both from Seattle’s Scene fans and the straight metallers grown in 80s and 90s. Their last works (studio and live) are dated 1995, Tad Doyle nowadays has his own studio (Witch Ape), his own more-heavy-than-Tad band Brother Of Sonic Cloth, his solo carrier as a pianist and some other project releated with music.

QUICK side. Studio recordings from sessions at two different locations, Jupiter Studios with Martin Feveryear, and Zachary Landsdowne at Electric Eel, both in Seattle in 1999. These songs were never before released until now (even if ‘Mummified Cop’ is on YouTube). This is the last incarnation of the band, a three piece consisting of original members Tad Doyle and Kurt Danielson with the new drummer Mike Mongrain.

Layne in kinderwhore slapping Demri, Mad Season rare pictures surfaced

Mad Season made history with only an album: the masterpiece: ‘Above’ (1994). The darkest grunge band ever was that place where Layne Staley found a sort of comfort zone free to express himself without Jerry Cantrell’s heavy presence. We all know the history of the cover used for that album: an illustration made by Staley himself from picture of a kiss between him and his soulmate Demri Parrott.

Now we have the full material from the photoshoot for the album, never seen before. no-one seems to know who the photographer is. The pics was on sale on ebat but now the link doesn’t work anymore.

The photos and the negatives are, you know, whoah! We can see a passionate kiss between Layne and Demri (very different from the one used for the cover who was more punk), the twos naked, Stanley in kinderwhore slapping his little girl dressed only with a short overalls, various shoots of Demri and one of the singer wounded in the face with blood and black eyes.

These could be the sadomasochist photos that Nick Pollock mentioned to David De Sola in the unofficial biography “Alice In Chains: The Untold Story” that Layne had showed him, as noted a fan discussing about this material on Facebook but it doesn’t really care.

We have this great stuff and it is something very Artistic and full of Love between two very beautiful miserable Souls, must see again and again.

 

 

Are you ready for the return of Camel Lips?

L7 will assume the role of Camel Lips again. On next April 21st the director John Waters will celebrate his 72nd birthday with an event at El Club in Detroit. Waters will perform a live commentary of his cult movie ‘Serial Mom’ (1994) where Donita Sparks, Suzi Gardner, Jennifer Finch and Dee Plakas were a band named Camel Lips (all the four members wore “pants that had padded pussies so it was very accentuated, the shape of our crotch area!” as Donita has been quoted).

After a Q&A moment L7 (or Camel Lips?) will get on stage to perform something, maybe ‘Gas Camber’: the song they wrote for the movie.

Ganesa, read this interview while listening their great music!

Ganesa come from Karelia and most of you can remind them as participants in Paper Cut’s Grungy Bands World Cup, so, you know, it’s clear I think they are something special in a very positive way.

The Russian band has recorded several Eps, a full-lenght album (Первый Вздох) and a single (Voices) mixed and produced by the legend Tad Doyle.

Their work stays on the border between the Alice in Chains, The Melvins, Tad and My Sister’s Machine grunge type and the punky one for the shortness (most of the tracks are less than 4 minutes long).

Their album is written and sung entirely in Russian, but despite the linguistic difference you can feel an unusual attitude. Первый Вздох doesn’t let you breathe, is like as you are on a cascade and you have to go down safe with Ganesa charge and energy. Their rhytmic base is pretty excellent melted in that powerful sound given by two great guitars and the voice of Aleksander Rybkin who fits perfectly like the shoe of Cinderella. Listening to them you can feel the gloomy atmosphere that was taken out of Seattle.

Paper Cuts: Why did you use Russian for the songs? Maybe your albums are intended for Russian people could be the general idea.

Aleksander Rybkin: Actually,I have no troubles to make an English-language lyrics, but I realise, that the big part of people couldn’t understand it even at native language but now, after co-workin’ with Tad Doyle, the idea to use English more took a place in band’s view, its sounds better, I think and if some people don’t cought the message (if the message would be in the lyrics at all), so which language we should used?

PC: In Russia you have a controversial President, how is really the situation with music, do you feel that atmosphere of censorship and bans or there are only too many stories about his guide?

AR: I think too many stories but I dislike today’s regime.

 

PC: How does Ganesa start and grew?

AR: Since I listened to Nirvana first time and visited the few rehelsals of a local band, consisted of my friends. After it my schoolmate, whose also like to play, but black metal, only shown me the person who became our guitarist and my bestfriend as close as brother (Sergey) we got too many names and members, but we both always stay together in spite of different look or listening and we mostly creatin’ the music. At our 1st LP there were someone feelin’ or something like that in the most of the songs (although some of them were written many years ago and we’d recorded the album at 3 studios, cause I’d try to find the whole stuff, we neened to) and here will be no such common part. During our performance I heard most people say things as: “Look, they sound like Nirvana, they are shit” at the same time from the other part of the concert hall:”It’s not the Nirvana sound! They shit and not the grunge at all”. But, when Fathers like half of TAD band, Nick from MSM, and singer from Malfunktion (brother of Andrew Wood)+Xana from Seattle’s grungestoryteller told me that we rock it means we’re really ok, for me. They are all very very great musicians.

PC: How do you create songs and lyrics?

AR: Close and different ways at the same time… Lyrics is just the additional instrument here. But not without ideas: I take some feelings and wrote some lines to describe it. About the music-collective soul here, mostly.

PC: Can you try to describe this soul?

AC: The soul of the band? We’re like the family (but sometimes some of fam are really bastards) one of us come to studio with riff and here we go!

PC: What’s your future plane for the band?

AR: Talkin’ about plans, now we already collect songs for new release (EP as minimum, but who knows? Album also could be great). It’d be without any concept, only the whole sound. So it’d sound like very angry My Sister’s Machine (Hi, Nick!) met TAD in company of Sonic Youth and decided to jammin’ with KOЯN and Deftones.

Skating Polly: the teaser of album 5 directed by Henry Mortensen

Skating Polly fifth record in studio will be released in Spring. The band published the teaser directed by Henry Mortensen, son of the Academy Award winner Viggo and of the seminal punk Exene Cervenka who appeares singing with the band (what a guest).

All song produced and mixed by Brad Wood (as ‘Adore’ by The Smashing Pumpkins, the self-titled of Placebo and a pair of Veruca Salt works).

In the teaser we can hear a few notes very fuzzy and grungy, so we can imagine that we are going to hear another masterpiece from these young guys named Kelli, Peyton and Kurtis (on his first record with his sisters).

The tracks will be 13: a few of them as ‘Queen For A Day’ played during the last months gigs and others that have nice titles as ‘Hollywood Factory’ or ‘They Are Cheap (but I’m Free’).

So you can play the teaser below and remember: this is my favourite band since 5 years circa and they were finalists in out Female Fronted World Cup.

That Nirvana music are not rarities! The decline of music journalism

In these days John Purkley a.k.a. The Observer, a “friend” of Kurt Cobain published on YouTube 4 cassettes he claims that the Nirvana singer gave him. He and NME, Spin and dozen of media all over the world say this are something unheard before but this is a great lie. The versions of the songs posted by Purkley are all included in the Outcesticides and in the boxset ‘With The Lights Out’. I have try to let pass this shit, but finally I have to write these lines. Purkley is posting videos every day now and he speaks about stories of Kurt, Tracy Marander, The Melvins, Krist Novoselic etc. who must be finished in his unreleased book ‘Paper Cuts’ (oh, shit!). The Observer talks about hurricanes that almost destroyed that tapes, but he and his sister could obviously save this “unreleased” treasure. And our friends of NME, Spin etc. gave the story to some writer who clearly didn’t hear Nirvana bootlegs and b-sides so the little ones copied and pasted the news and millions of people now thinks that we have 2 hours of “new” music by Kurt Cobain.

La palabra a los campeones, an interview with Carne Para Perra

At the end they did it. Los chilenos Carne Para Perra won our Grungy Bands World Cup in the extended final versus Acid Brains from Italy. Chile scored 55% winning with 118 votes to 95 of the italians. After the victory they played a show to celebrate the Paper Cuts trophy. But you know, our games are more than something funny: we want to share and spread the music and the messages of the underground bands all over the world and los campeones got so much to say.

Q&A:

The name Carne Para Perra, the band logo and, for example, the clip for ‘Diosa Fortuna’; all of these choices appear little extremes, especially in the grunge scene who is often feminist. Why did you choose this way? Is like riot grrrls who call themselves “sluts” to give their message pro-women?

The band’s name and the band’s logo are part of a concept. There are a saying that goes “Life is a bitch” so what if the life itself is a living entity? it should eat to survive so humanity becomes its food, we all are its meat, we are Meat for bitch.

The logo shows a human figure with different beef cuts on his body being the graphic representation of the idea.

“Diosa Fortuna” is about a reality that is latent all over the world, the loss of respect towards women and the murders of women at the hands of men. It is necessary for some men to learn to respect women and all others, just as it is necessary for some women to respect themselves and everyone around them.

That videoclip is specifically a bad combination between a man and a woman with unbalanced values.

One way to combat this reality is to speak publicly about it, silence is the best ally for these atrocities.

Is it easy to play rock and/or grunge in Chile? Which are the genres most listened in your country?

It is not easy for the bands with their own songs, regardless of the style of the band. There is a proliferation of tribute bands and that sells more than the underground bands.

Metal music is the style that has the most committed followers.

And how is your own musical background? When and how did you become grungers?

Eduardo (guitar/vocals): Nirvana and Alice in Chains here, I became grunger when listen to Nirvana in 1995, that was the day that my life changed.

What are the main themes of your songs and who is your ideal listener?

As a band we tries to speak about the human emotions from a darkest point of view. Fear, love, melancholia, violence, etc mixed into lyrics that can be interpreted in different ways according to the person who listens to them.

Ideal listener? That´s hard to say, if our music can provide a pleasant moment to anyone that is enough and rewarding for us.

Can you tell how was your own experience of the Grungy Bands World Cup?

It was really an honor that our music broke our borders and could be heard in other latitudes. We are very grateful that you help us spread our music and grunge music in general around the world.

Which are the other bands of the competition you like most?

They all had a spectacular sound but our favorites were Black Income and I’m a Sloth. It was a very novel idea to discover new grunge bands around the world, Thanks for that.

In addition we already knew Cable35, Nape and Violent Soho.

What is Carne Para Perra greatest desire?

Keep playing and creating new songs and do it for a long time, until we run out of life.

#GrungyBandsWC: the final will be Acid Brains (Italy) vs. Carne Para Perra (Chile)

Acid Brains and Carne Para Perra give the final of our Grungy Bands World Cup to Italy and Chile.

The Italian band won with The Lost Poets (Sweden) with a majestic and surprising performance. This semifianl was epic and dramatic: Acid Brains took the lead but on the afternoon The Lost Poets ganed ground and could even overtake them. The two bands were 50%-50% for three times but the Italians had some more and the final result was 77-70: new record of votes per team in ev’ry competition and new record of total votes for match (in ev’ry competion as well). The Lost Poets will have the 3rd match play-off with the Austrian I’m a Sloth and will win the “fair play prize” for sure ’cause they voted for ev’ry single match, even after their bitter loss and let a message on their FB match to wish to their competitor Acid Brains a Merry Christmas and good luck in the final.

The second semifinal was more easy but the two bands and their fans gave all they had: both Carne Para Perra and I’m a Sloth established their personal record of votes (55 and 35) and had shown their enthusiasm.

Now the competition will have the Christmas break and on the 27th from 11 AM (CET), UTC +1 there will be the 3rd place play-off .

But we got a surprise: the grand final will last more than 24 hours. The match between Acid Brains and Carne Para Perra will start on the 28th at 11 AM and will end on the 30th at 23,59 (usual timezone).

#GrungyBandsWC Are you ready for the semifinals?

Acid Brains, The Lost Poets, I’m a Sloth, Carne Para Perra: these are the fantastic 4 who gain the semifinals of our Grungy Bands World Cup.

The first match will be Acid Brains VS. The Lost Poets a.k.a Italy VS. Sweden. The Italian stallions won with the Irishes (Otherkin didn’t defend the title won in the Female Fronted Bands World Cup by Vulpynes) with 83%; the result of the first quarter was 5-25, if they want to go to the final they have to find at least 10 votes more. The Swedishes are strong as their Viking’s roots, The Lost Poets scored 11-34 (76%) in the match against Spain that wasn’t so open as we could imagine after Round of 16. Less than 24 hours to see who could go to the final between Italy and Sweden, a challenge that reminds something to the soccer fans.

The other semifinal will start on Thursday and involves I’m a Sloth from Austria and Carne Para Perra from Chile. The Austrian got a great comeback versus the famous Australian challengers: they won 19-25 (57%) and now they need 20 votes more to gain the final. Yay, because los chilenos scored again 43 votes 72% against the famous American opponents. Carne Para Perra is the only non-European band in the semifinals. This competition seems very different from the Female one that got 4 English-spoken Nations on the final 4 (here we have Scandinavians who sing in English, Mediterraneans in English and Italian, Mittle-Europeans who sings in English and German and Southamericans in Spanish). Even the results are very different: in the Female Cup the were no Round of 16 and the quarters were poor (record 20 votes for Hands Off Gretel), but in semifinals we got a 67-50 and in the final Vulpynes won 72-39 versus Skating Polly, could the Grungy Bands World Cup’s protagonists do better?

#GrungyBandsWorldCup Who are in the quarter finals?

Round of 16 was not so fighted, every band who won did it in a very easy way, this because they all were lucky to have found challengers with a cold fanbase. Yay, ’cause our previous Female Fronted Bands World Cup, has teached us that to win these titles you need to have a great tribe of hot and lovely fans. During Round of 16 we have seen that some bands know how to involve people who love them and them music, as we know that more than one of round 2 matches will be unsafe for the hearts. So who are the greatest 8 bands? Otherkin (Ireland), Acid Brains (Italy), Las Sexpeares (Spain), The Lost Poets (Sweden), I’m a Sloth (Austria), Violent Soho (Australia), Carne Para Perra (Chile) and Dead Sara (USA).

The first match will start tomorrow, 15th Dec. from 8 PM (UTC +1) the opponents are Otherkin, the worst of the bests in tRound of 16 with 73% and 11 votes versus 4 with the indonesian Cocox Iwax Endox, and Acid Brains the Italian stallions who scored the exactly double points than the Irishes.

Then Las Sexpeares from Spain (85% on first match) who has a good fanbase versus The Lost Poets from Sweden (86%) who has a majestic fanbase who helped him to score 9 points more than the Spanishes next rivals. So Spain got a call-to-action because this could be a sparkly match.

The third match is interesting too: I’m a Slot – Violent Soho. The Austrians won 36-8 versus the Canadians Metz (a Sub Pop Record’s band doesn’t need to be involved in these stupid games). The Australians are too huge that the fan groups did the job and could score easly 26 votes, but the need some more if they want to gain the semifinal.

Last quarter is Carne Para Perra – Dead Sara. Los “cabrones” de Chile got the record in terms of result: 43-3, the Americans scored only 17 points but got the best percentage: 94% of choices against Nape. If the DEADicated will not wake the semifinal could easly go to Chile.
